Interior designers are tapping in to 2021’s biggest trends with help from The Light Yard – from creating spa-like sanctuaries in residential bathrooms to achieving a fresh, modern look with the help of black home accessories and hardware.

But this summer it was all about the colour green.

There’s no doubt that green has emerged the shade of the season. Bottle, sage, olive, pistachio – these viridescent hues seem to be everywhere on social media right now. They are also having a moment in the worlds of residential and hospitality interior design.

On Pinterest, searches for the term ‘sage green interiors’ have recently surged by 105%, says womanandhome.com. Meanwhile, interior designers have shared that many clients now want to shift away from bright white walls, opting instead for warmer colours such as sage green and muted marigold.

Driven by a need to generate a calm atmosphere and a strong sense of mood, pastel projects are winning droves of fans. Easy-on-the-eyes colour pairings (think pistachio teamed with a rosy blush) will be riding high throughout the rest of this year and well into 2022.

So why is green such a popular shade? Well, colour psychologists are quick to point out that green hues conjure up feelings of being immersed in nature.

Bathing in nature, also known as shinrin-yoku, carries tremendous therapeutic benefits for our mental health and wellbeing. It can even lower blood pressure and boost our immunity. And when green is introduced as part of an interiors scheme, it can help to bring the outdoors in – and deliver some of the benefits you get from being out in nature, even whilst spending time inside.

Green is also a stylist’s dream because it’s so easy to work into a wider colour scheme. “Green is at the centre of the color wheel so you can combine it with both warm and cool hues,” says Sarah Spiteri on Livingetc. “Greens with a blue base are impactful, so introducing soft tones of clay white and chalky grey in furniture and accessories bring a calming feel. Greens with a yellow undertone, such as olive, pop alongside gold or bronze, enhancing their warmth.”

Adding pops of green to your décor

Of course, one of the quickest and most affordable ways to introduce a new accent colour to your home is with a lick of paint. If you’re itching for inspiration, take a good look at Valspar’s “Norway Spruce” or Farrow & Ball’s “Green Smoke”, both of which are bang on trend.

But even if you’re not prepared to overhaul your walls with fresh paint or wallpaper, it’s easy to incorporate green through textiles or glassware, like these Recycled Green Glass Bubble Vases from Rose & Grey.

Or, add green with lighting. The Light Yard’s Calex in Colour range has been immensely popular since it was first launched in 2019. Whether you’re redecorating your bathroom, bedroom, home office, kitchen or nook, the Calex Boden pendant light marries vibrant colour with pared-back style – for a subtle look and just the right pop of verdant colour.

Along with the Boden, we offer two further shapes – the Kiruna and the Avesta – and, if desired, all three can be combined together with a sleek ceiling rose. This cluster is exquisite in Emerald Green, providing visual interest and a dimmable, gentle source of light.
