Have you ever weighed the cost of moving versus remodeling your home? Keitra is an empty nester who loves her town of Smyrna, Georgia. She had the same decision to make. Keep her home of 30 years filled with memories of raising her two sons, or move into a brand-new updated townhome?

After touring a new townhome with her son, Andre, it was clear that they both wanted Keitra to keep their family home. However, Keitra had a specific wish list her designer needed to meet in order to stay. The initial budget of $60,000 would have to create an open concept main level, a large kitchen island with seating and hardwood floors.

In the beginning, the kitchen was tight, dark and closed off from the rest of the living area. Keitra shared how much she loves to entertain and how cooking in the kitchen makes communicating with her guests difficult. By removing these walls, the entire upper level of her home was transformed.

The kitchen design came together perfectly. Mercury Duluth cabinets in Pebble lined the long wall in the kitchen with a built-in sideboard in the dining room. This maximized Keitra’s space after losing two main walls in her original floor plan. She gained back plenty of drawers and tall stacked cabinets in her new design. With the addition of the large kitchen island in Duluth Cobalt came endless countertop space for cooking and a convenient pull-out waste container next to the sink. Now guests can pull up a chair with some wine while Keitra puts the finishing touches on their meal. Keitra’s kitchen designer partnered with CliqStudios designer, Lindsey Bay, to create this masterpiece.

Keitra’s favorite modern style was married with small traditional details to match the home. Traditional curves added some softness through pendant lighting, the custom curved kitchen hood, gold cabinet knobs and round dining room table.

When it was time for the kitchen reveal, Keitra walked in she said, “Love, love, love this!”. Now, the dining room, kitchen and living room were all finally one cohesive, open space. “I have plenty of space in here. And I like that I have storage over here (behind the island) because I can put my items that I don’t use that often over here”.

“These renovations, they just exceeded anything I could’ve imagined. What stands out the most to me is how open everything is. I love the lighting”. During a video called her son, Andre, she pointed out the kitchen hood and commented, “Look at that, isn’t that gorgeous?”. With a big smile on his face, Andre said, “You can make 30 more years of memories to come.”

The original price Keitra paid for her home in 1993 was $116,000. With her project investment of $60,000, her home is now worth upwards of $520,000 in 2024.
