Do you ever feel like furniture manufacturers don’t design for you? That’s because plus-size people are often overlooked when it comes to furniture. However, at Couch Potatoes, we believe that everyone deserves to be comfortable in their own home!
In this blog post, we will discuss the best couches for plus-size people that we have at Couch Potatoes. We’ll talk about the different types of couches and how they can accommodate plus-size people. We want to help make your shopping experience a little easier, so you can find the perfect couch for your home!
What to Look For When Choosing a Couch for Plus-Sized People
1.) Choose a Couch with Short Legs or No Legs at All
Couches with shorter, sturdier legs are sure to give you more peace of mind than thin, stylistic tapered legs you would find on one of our couches like the Ladybird. Look for wider legs like a block foot rather than opting for a square or splayed leg. Even better, a couch without any legs at all reduces the amount of space between the subframe of the couch and the ground.
2.) A Couch with a Sturdy Frame is a Must
Couch Potatoes prides itself on our quality frames. Most of our frames are made of hardwood or plywood. Hardwood is the best material for couch frames, it is a solid piece of material used primarily on higher-end furniture. Steel frames are also a great choice if you’re looking for a couch, but those will be more used on reclining furniture which isn’t a part of Couch Potatoes’ selections.
Plywood is a more cost-effective material, but it doesn’t suffer from the same long-term issues that hardwood does with the expansion or shrinkage of the wood due to moisture or temperature changes. Plywood is a dependable material on couch frames because of the way the sheets are glued together in a rotating grain, which promotes strength and flexibility.
3.) You’re Going to Need a Good Fabric
With any couch, a good fabric is a must. You want your fabric to look beautiful in your home, but also last the testament of time and use. All of the fabrics Couch Potatoes use, undergo the double rub test. The double rub test simulates how many times a person on average gets up and off a sofa and tests the durability and longevity of the fabric.
For plus-size people, the fabric of many couches is prone to stretching or tearing. This is disappointing. Couch Potatoes has a range of well-made fabrics to choose from and even some performance fabrics that are stain and tear-resistant (works well with your pets too).
4.) Get Some Firm Cushions
Having a couch that you can sink right into sounds great in theory, but not when it takes all your strength to rise from its clutches. Our Fluffy Collection, for example, is extremely plush, but one does not simply stand up from the Fluffy.
That’s no help to plus-size people, who would preferably choose a couch that you don’t need to struggle to get out of. Firmer cushions and a good seat depth would be the solution to that problem. It’s also better for those with physical restrictions like bad knees, who don’t need to plummet a mile downwards to find a seat.
