What used to be a small and crowded kitchen has now been revamped into a light, open-concept heart of the home. Designed with a Shaker door style painted white, this kitchen radiates light, and is full of function. Some special features found inside the cabinetry include tray dividers over the refrigerator, a roll-out tray near the dishwasher, and a pull-out trash cabinet by the sink.

Designer Lia Kohl discussed how storage was the ultimate goal with minimal kitchen space. The original floor plan was used apart from a few changes. They removed the soffit and suspended wall cabinets over the island which meant they needed to regain storage in other ways. This is where the pantries came in: based on the clients’ needs, Lia recommended having access to pantry storage on both the living room and kitchen side as well.

Collaboration between the two was fun and creative. Lia said ‘we developed a great relationship and fed off each other’s ideas’. She mentioned the homeowner came to her with some great ideas in the beginning, and they worked to integrate them together. Overall, to open up the room, the client wanted to go with an updated white shaker cabinet style. Decorative, angled crown molding was used to bring wall cabinets to the ceiling and polished marble countertops added a luxurious final touch.
