After all their kids left for college, Jeremy and Misty realized their house needed a big change. Their outdated split-level in Sioux Falls, South Dakota was long overdue for a remodel, and they wanted a cool update that would bring their kids home. Down Home Fab’s Chelsea and Cole DeBoer came in with fresh and bold ideas.

Misty said they wanted new energy and something that would fit with adults. Although they didn’t have a distinct style to guide Chelsea and Cole, they both agreed their house needed a clean classic look and something with a wow factor. From there, Jeremy and Misty let Chelsea and Cole do whatever they wanted to create the home of their dreams.

Before the remodel, the kitchen was closed off with a half wall, and had old oak cabinets and a large sliding glass door. The homeowners also wanted to upgrade their entryway and main bathroom. Lastly, the basement needed a major update as well. Jeremy said this space seemed to sit and gather random belongings. Overall, the goal was to create a combination sports bar and speakeasy space where they could spend time together and have fun as a family.

Chelsea and Cole had a large project on their hands, so they decided to partner with CliqStudios. Together with CliqStudios designer, Randy Christopher, they used a stunning new Craftsman door style, Balto, in the kitchen. To create a bold look with a cozy-contemporary wow factor, Chelsea created a tri-tone kitchen design. Most of the kitchen was in Oak Harbor Sheer, but the pantry and kitchen hood were finished in Maple French Roast and the island in Maple Onyx.

This elevated bold look was partnered with stunning creamy stone countertops and large light gray woven pendant lights for dramatic effect. Not only was the kitchen drastically different, but cabinet storage was too. Now the kitchen is packed with cabinet accessories like storage pull-outs, pots and pans pull-outs, drawer bases, a roll-out tray pantry, tray dividers, blind corner pull-outs and an incredibly large kitchen island.

Misty and Jeremy’s old kitchen is now a distant memory compared to its new beauty and function. Chelsea also had the sliding glass door removed and replaced with a smaller single door. They didn’t forget about the homeowners’ small dog either. Chelsea and Cole even included a doggy door with a house right next to the dining room.

When it came time for the reveal, Jeremy and Misty were in complete awe. Misty started crying and Jeremy was speechless. Misty eventually said, “Unbelievable! I could never have dreamed of living in a home like this.” She commented to her husband, “It’s absolutely perfect. Look at your kitchen!”

Again, Misty was in complete awe and said, “Oh my goodness, is this the same house?”. While Jeremy was exploring the design, Chelsea asked him, “Are you excited to cook in your new kitchen?” He responded, “Oh goodness yes. That backsplash is amazing.” Misty commented, “I love the color scheme, this is so perfect.”

Chelsea talked a little more about the design, “We went all in with all new cabinets. We did a tri-tone kitchen. That was something that I haven’t even done, and I think it’s so unique and it’s going to stand out.” Misty said, “I didn’t even know it was an option to do three colors.” Her husband interjected, “But it works, it all works!” With tears in her eyes, Misty said, “You guys did a phenomenal job, I couldn’t have asked for anything different. It’s just the beginning!”

As they continued through the house, Misty and Jeremy saw the new bathroom. Now it was completely changed with a spa-like atmosphere. Textured light brown tile covered the black framed walk-in shower and beautiful stone-like porcelain floors led up to the new vanity. The new double vanity was finished in Craftsman’s inset Talbot door in the stunning Maple French Roast finish. Misty said, “Oh my gosh, seriously! It’s like a spa! This is like what I see in fancy hotels- I am so blown away!”

Walking through the new entryway, their space was much larger than before. Chelsea and Cole fit the entry with more Balto cabinets and mudroom lockers for storage. This way, they gained an open feel while maintaining much-needed storage space.

In the basement, the homeowners gained a brand-new usable space. Unlike before, it was now complete with space to sit, entertain, make drinks and even play foosball or ping pong. The stunning bar cabinetry was finished in Craftsman’s Balto door style in Maple Onyx for a dramatic effect. Chelsea and Cole created a completely unique space with ombre painted walls, multiple hang out spots and a customized ‘Cotton Lounge’ sign in honor of their family name.

Misty gasped and said, “This is so cool! Oh my goodness, look at this!” Jeremy responded by saying, “Yea our basement before just kind of said ‘put stuff here’.” Chelsea commented, “Do you think your kids are going to want to come hang out?” Misty responded, “I think they might be excited. It definitely has a wonderful speakeasy vibe. It’s cozy and like a whole different part of the house.” She finished by saying, “It’s absolutely perfect. Over-exceeded our expectations.”

In the end, Chelsea and Cole were discussing the project. She said, “This house was a little bit of a risk for us. I feel like with Misty and Jeremy giving us so much control over the design, it was almost even more scary, but I feel like it really came together nicely and I’m so glad that they love it. We were able to try new things and it gave them the vibes they were going for.”
