Not everyone has to deal with winter coats and slushy snow boots – but a mudroom still comes in handy.

In this article:

  • How mudrooms are used in warmer climates
  • The benefits of having a custom-designed mudroom
  • Five examples of custom IKEA mudrooms designed by IKD

Why a Mudroom is Essential in Warm Climates

Not all homeowners require space for bulky coats, snow boots, and scarves. Many of our mudroom customers just need a place to store their going-out gear so they can come home, relax, and easily find what they need when it’s time to start over again.

In fact, about half of our mudroom designs are for warm-climate customers who want an attractive, affordable IKEA mudroom custom-designed to fit their non-blizzard needs.

Even Fred Rogers from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood had his coat closet and bench seat so he could change his shoes and sweater. A mudroom doesn’t have to be for mud; it’s a transitional space. And whether you need a place to store sports gear, beach towels, laptop bags, or a familiar red sweater, you could use a mudroom.

Below, we examine how a few of these warm (or at least warmer) weather mudrooms are used – including one from Mr. Rogers’ hometown of Pittsburgh, PA.

Modern IKEA Mudroom Design in San Diego

Monique wanted a small mudroom by her back door with a modern touch. We designed a mix of IKEA PAX frames with high-gloss gray FARDAL doors and SEKTION cabinets with ASKERSUND doors in light ash to achieve this.

You’ll notice hooks for light jackets and plenty of cabinet space for hats, bags, sunglasses, and anything else this California homeowner might need on her way out the door. The custom-designed bench with storage provides a place to store shoes, have a seat, and experience that all-important transition.

Athletic-Inspired IKEA Mudroom in Pittsburgh

a small built-in IKEA mudroom with AXSTAD white doors

We’re told some people run for fun. Pennsylvania customer Adelwale is one of these people.

Adelwale’s main concern wasn’t for outerwear storage but for his running gear. Of course, his partner had something to say on the matter, so his design includes plenty of practical entryway organization as well as sneaker storage.

IKD designer Merari put together a design that included IKEA cabinet hacks to achieve the built-in look he desired. To support the bench seat, Merari modified three 18″W x 24″D x 30″H SEKTION cabinets to 15”H with 10”H MAXIMERA drawers to create the little cubbies above the sneaker storage. These cubbies are great for folded sweat towels and incoming mail.

The mudroom design is outfitted with AXSTAD matte white door and drawer fronts. Even the wall panel with hooks was made using AXSTAD fronts. The upper cubbies, which provide storage for hats, Adelwale’s AirPods, running weights, sweatbands, and other gear, were created using six 18″W x 15″H IKEA wall cabinets.

Multi-Purpose IKEA Mudroom Solution in Fairfax

a multipurpose IKEA mudroom with tall SEKTION cabinets

Judith needed a mudroom in her Virginia home that did more than double duty. Her household consisted of her mother, her fiancée, and a new baby, and a simple hall closet would not do.

By designing a combination of twelve SEKTION cabinets and eleven panels, IKD designer Javier gave Judith floor-to-ceiling storage for seasonal items, cleaning supplies, diaper bag essentials, shoes, and more. Because she wanted to maximize mudroom storage, Javier designed the 20” H wall cabinets by modifying 30”H x 24”D x 24″W base cabinets. SEKTION base cabinets always offer more depth than wall cabinets.

Beneath the smaller high cabinets and open cubby are two tall SEKTION cabinets, and the bench seat is a modified 36″W x 24″D x 15″H wall cabinet. Judith purchased and painted the beadboard backing and used IKEA BAGGANAS brass hooks for hanging storage.

This IKEA mudroom meets all of Judith’s storage needs, with the bench seat doing triple duty. It’s a place for her to put on shoes, change the baby, and place folded laundry, as the laundry machines are directly across from the mudroom.

Travel-Friendly IKEA Mudroom in Columbia

IKEA mudroom with Semihandmade doors beneath vaulted ceiling

Elisia used her South Carolina mudroom design as an opportunity to create additional living room storage and an abundance of storage for her and her husband’s travel-heavy lifestyle. Their home is more of a home base.

In addition to outerwear and seasonal storage, Elisia needed storage for luggage, travel documents, and even some grab-and-go toiletry bags. The outerwear and seasonal storage areas required more space than usual because she could be traveling to somewhere that was twenty degrees one week and one hundred degrees the next.

IKD Designer Merari fulfilled Elisia’s wish to have the mudroom design serve as a transition to the living room by designing the entire wall with IKEA SEKTION cabinets and Semihandmade supermatte slab light grey doors. The open storage allowed for additional book storage and souvenir display, while white shaker cabinet fronts towards the bottom of the design seamlessly hid unsightly HVAC housing. Due to the 12’ vaulted ceiling, maximizing storage and making it look good required a few IKEA cabinet hacks, like trimming SEKTION base cabinets from 21″W x 24″D x 30″H to 21″W x 24″D x 20″H.

Beach-Ready IKEA Mudroom Design for a Beach House in Tampa

blue IKEA mudroom with MAXIMERA drawers and plenty of storage

IKD customer June required a functional IKEA mudroom design for her beach house, which she often rented out via AirBnB. June knew she wanted IKEA’s AXSTAD matte blue doors before contacting us because they matched her existing kitchen.

She had space in an enclosed back porch and wanted to dedicate an entire wall to the warm-weather mudroom. This is where she would keep everything a short-term guest might need: towels, beach chairs, sunscreen, extra hats and sunglasses, flip-flop storage, and a hand vacuum for cleaning up sand.

IKD delivered with the above design, featuring SEKTION cabinets, MAXIMERA drawers, and BAGGANAS brass handles.
