Maximizing Value with IKEA Cabinets in Mudroom Designs

In this article:

  • Keeping your IKEA mudroom project under budget
  • Adding mudroom storage using IKEA cabinet
  • How IKEA cabinet hacks can work for you

You’re an IKEA customer looking for better storage options in your home, but you have two main problems: Limited space and a limited budget. What can you do?

Fortunately, combining IKEA’s SEKTION kitchen system with IKEA cabinets can provide cost-effective solutions by creating a new IKEA mudroom. Recently IKD was able to do just that for three different families whose budgets were under $3,000 by utilizing IKEA cabinet “hacks” (modifications) that added storage space and style without adding to their bottom line.

In this blog we’ll take a look at an IKEA mudroom for an active family with five children that needed (you guessed it!) five storage sections; another which combines a more “traditional” mudroom mixed with general storage and a remodeled closet area that was turned into an IKEA mudroom complete with storage for backpacks, winter clothes and charging stations for each child — all without exceeding their $3,000 budget.

Let’s take a look at how these IKEA mudrooms were accomplished!

Family Alcove Mudroom Transformation

When you have too much stuff and nowhere to put it, you need to get creative to hide it all. IKD designer Frank was able to do just that for an active family of five from Lancaster, PA, who requested an IKEA mudroom be built into their existing family room alcove.

The wall cabinet area, which measures 140-3/4” (L) x 30″ (D) x 96″ (H), features IKEA ENKOPING and IKEA VEDDINGE door styles in white accented with IKEA NYDALA pulls. This creates a warm and natural feel to the space. To make everything else fit, Frank utilized IKEA cabinet modifications.

“We did a few IKEA cabinet hacks in this mudroom design. For instance, the three tall white cabinets were reduced from 24” (W) x 15” (D) x 80″ (H) to 73” (H). A 60″ (H) door was designed for each one which left a 13” (H) open alcove on top for additional open cubby storage for wicker baskets,” Frank explains.

The tall dark cabinets now provide ample storage for the five children, including space for their electronics and stereo equipment; backpacks; sports equipment and bulkier clothing like sweatshirts and winter coats. Impressively, this IKEA mudroom was completed (https://inspiredkitchendesign.com/what-does-an-ikea-mudroom-really-cost/) for $2,949, including $1,251 for IKEA products plus $1,698 for hack components and extra items.

Compact Wrap-Around Mudroom Storage

This IKEA mudroom in San Francisco, CA is chock full of storage. Good thing, because the small 72-square-foot space needed to fit an extensive list of storage items, including coat storage; shoe storage; a place to store backpacks; a utility cabinet for brooms, mops and cleaning supplies; refrigerator drawers; an appliance garage and storage for dog food and canned goods. Phew!

IKD designer Merari was able to incorporate all this and more using IKEA’s SEKTION kitchen system combined with white IKEA HAGGEBY cabinet doors complemented by IKEA BILLSBRO handles and IKEA KARLBY walnut countertops above the 24″ (W) x 24″ (D) x 32″ (H) refrigerator drawers on the adjacent wall.

The tall IKEA HAGGEBY cabinets reach to the ceiling and provide plenty of storage for coats and shoes for the children and still room for cleaning items. On the opposite adjacent wall there are several open cubbies for wicker baskets to hold incoming and outgoing mail, for example, with lower open space below for dog food storage and for “Fido” to eat his meal without disruption.

Overall, this IKEA mudroom cost only $2,934 which includes $1,994 for IKEA products and $940 for extra items.

Connected Storage for a Family of Four

For a family from Denver, CO, their IKEA mudroom was all about making storage so their four kids could store their backpacks, winter coats and hats and still have leftover room to include charging stations for their electronics.

The solution was to remodel the family’s existing closet area and incorporate IKEA cabinet “hacks” to create additional space. This worked out well as IKD designer Daniel selected IKEA HAVSTORP cabinets in turquoise complemented by IKEA ECKBACKEN light gray countertops for the bench area.

The 81″ (L) x 54″ (D) x 108″ (H) mudroom does feature clever cabinet “hacks.” For example, Daniel created two 15” (W) x 15” (D) x 15 (H) base cabinets (below the bench seating area) and featuring IKEA MAXIMERA drawers and fronts. Daniel accomplished this by reducing the height of two IKEA SEKTION 15″ (W) x 15” (D) x 30” (H) wall cabinets. For more storage, he also created two 18” (W) x 24” (D) x 15″ (H) base cabinets (below the countertop) with IKEA MAXIMERA drawers and fronts by reducing the height of two SEKTION 18″ (W) x 24” (D) x 30” (H) wall cabinets. Meanwhile, the upper cabinets reach almost to the top of the 108″ (H) ceilings for additional seasonal storage.

In total, this IKEA mudroom cost $2,005 in IKEA products plus only $677 in cabinet hack components and extra items.
