Stylist tips: Julia Green on the impact of colour in your home

By Julia Green

Living with colour is personal to everyone and there is a hue out there for every individual. But have you ever stopped to wonder why it is that certain people lean into certain colours? The psychology of colour is fascinating and we are here to demystify the science.

Colour in interior design is not merely a matter of aesthetics; it’s a powerful tool that influences our emotions, perceptions, and overall wellbeing within a space. Each hue carries its own associations, which elicit a wide range of feelings and varying levels of comfort.

Warm colours such as reds, oranges, and yellows, are known to evoke feelings of energy, passion, and warmth. They can create a sense of intimacy within a room, making it feel inviting and lively. The warm tones of this dining room with its deep moss green wall and muted earthy textures creates a comforting embrace. This room says “sit here and drink tea with me”.

Cool colours like blues, greens, and purples, evoke a sense of calm, tranquillity, and serenity. They have a soothing effect on the mind and body and are ideal for spaces where relaxation and contemplation are desired. “Lay with me, talk to me” is what this lounge room would say with its inviting and serene allure, just begging you to recline and relax.

Neutral colours such as whites, greys, and beiges provide a sense of balance. They serve as a backdrop for other colours to shine and can create a sense of openness and sophistication within a space. This bedroom is a mix of softness, prettiness, and calmness. Really it is just a bundle of loveliness that says, “Sleep with me, I will make you happy”.

Overall, colour in interior design is a powerful language that speaks directly to our emotions. Whether it’s through warm, cool or neutral hues, each colour can create a distinct mood and atmosphere within a space, ultimately shaping how we feel and experience our surroundings.

So have we convinced you to take a paintbrush to your walls? Will this information influence your next home purchase? Don’t be afraid; the worst that can happen is you change it up again. But the chances are you will love your transformation.

But be warned, embracing colour is addictive.
