Tasked with transforming an all-white, open plan kitchen, dining and living area for a client, stylist Julia Green of Greenhouse Interiors applied her favourite solution – colour. The celebrated creative drew on the Journey palette from the 2024 Dulux Colour Forecast when overhauling the neutral spaces into a much more colourful affair.

“This open living space was contemporary and had great bones – high ceilings, plenty of natural light and furniture with bohemian overtures – and while the space was relaxing, it felt one dimensional with white walls. To make it feel less like a holiday rental and more like a family home, it needed some character,” says Julia of the home located on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula.

Julia started with a neutral shade for the walls and ceilings – Dulux Lilac Light is a safe base that allows for the introduction of other colour and styling changes over time. “Adding colour to the ceiling helped to create a more cohesive look, compared to using a contrast trim, which can draw your eye from top to bottom rather than allowing the eye to wander seamlessly around the space,” says Julia.

The Journey palette was referenced throughout the makeover with custom made furniture and décor pieces layered up to create an eclectic, artful and elevated space. A cherry red and white striped fabric was selected for the banquette seating in the dining area and the dining table was painted in Dulux Swedish Blue.

“With its mid tone hues of yellow-greens, rich reds and plums and blues, the Dulux Journey palette takes influence from travel, cultural differences and bohemian charm. Any of the colours can be dialled up or down in intensity and still work beautifully and harmoniously together. It was the perfect palette to evoke warmth in this modern space.”

Nearby, a neutral couch referenced the wall colour and accent colours from the Journey palette were added using heavily patterned cushions and throws. Fun tassels, woven fabrics, colourful handmade vessels and wicker lighting fixtures feature throughout the styling. “The end result reveals a cohesive, open-plan space bursting with colour and texture that intrigues the viewer in and cocoons them in warmth.”
