We gave you a little glimpse of interior designer and TV personality James Treble’s renovation recently but today we’re bringing you the complete walk-through. Nestled on the NSW Central Coast, James has transformed what he called an ‘ugly duckling’ into a gorgeous Palm Springs inspired home. He and partner Sandro now spend their time between here and Sydney.

Inspired by the iconic mid-century Modern architecture that James and his family encountered on a trip to Palm Springs a few years ago, James set out to incorporate key features of the aesthetic into the home such as vertical cladding, natural stone walls and breeze blocks. A brand-new entry foyer (complete with bright yellow front door) sets the scene for the home’s Palm Springs story with a feature stone wall and terrazzo tiles extending from the exterior to the interior.
The original kitchen had bright green Formica tops and glossy timber laminate doors but is now a tranquil space with Polytec ‘Forage’ cupboard fronts a highlight. The green is paired with Caesarstone benchtops with complementary deep green veins and brass handles and tapware forming James’ chosen ‘jewellery’.

The nearby living and dining spaces were overhauled with the addition of multiple skylights that bring in abundant natural light.

The former kitchen became the master bedroom with a new wall separating it from the dining room. While on the smaller side, it’s large enough to fit a queen-size bed and bedside tables. Tall, mirrored wardrobe doors increase the feeling of space and matte black wall sconces add a refined hotel feel while leaving room on the bedsides for books and décor items. The wainscoting behind the bed adds further character.

The ensuite shower is located where there was once a toilet. Terrazzo floor tiles, elongated white subway tiles on the wall and brushed brass tapware and accessories add subtle, interesting texture.

The same finishes were repeated in the main bathroom for cohesion throughout the home.

The alfresco area had a major glow-up too – it acts as an extension of the home through a pair of French doors that create a fabulous indoor/outdoor flow. An outdoor cooking area features a BBQ, sink and pizza oven while a new pergola adds shade.

The clothes line area underwent a significant makeover too. James retained the home’s original Hills Hoist clothes line (an Aussie icon!) but painted it yellow in a colour he custom created with Taubmans. He added a raised garden bed that acts as a veggie patch and provides casual seating as well as a practical outdoor shower too.
