Being clever with their use of space, Sydney Swans co-captain Luke Parker and his interior designer partner Kate Lawrence managed to fit four decent-sized bedrooms into their dreamy Sydney duplexes.

Life is pretty hectic for Luke and his partner Kate. While he maintains a punishing training schedule with the Sydney Swans, Kate juggles a busy career as an interior designer. On top of those commitments, the couple are both keen home renovators and property developers.

When they built their new home – a duplex in inner Sydney – they wanted to create a sanctuary where they could relax at the end of a busy day. The two mirror-image properties both feature four spacious bedrooms with the master bedroom in Luke and Kate’s home being a ‘hotel-style’ retreat.

“We wanted all the bedrooms to feel spacious enough so that none of them felt like a ‘token’ bedroom,” says Kate. “Luke and I were both adamant they had to be true-sized bedrooms.”

Practical and polished

The duplex bedrooms tick a lot of buyer lust-haves, including adjoining balconies on some. Picture: Alan Richardson.

The bedrooms complement the rest of the home. They are stylish but also practical. There is one master bedroom on the ground floor and the remaining three bedrooms are upstairs.

“We felt a buyer may not want to walk up and down the stairs to get to their bed every day so we included a downstairs bedroom,” explains Kate. The space can also easily convert into an extra lounge area or study if the space isn’t needed as a bedroom.

Luxe looks

Luke was particularly focused on creating a master bedroom reminiscent of a luxe hotel experience. With their architect, the couple managed this by devoting space to the master bedroom, as well as installing a generous walk-in robe and a good sized ensuite.

“The layout also creates that hotel look,” Kate explains. “You walk through (the door) into the hallway and that hallway is part of our master bedroom. Our walk-in robe is on one side of the hallway. You continue down the hallway and meet the bedroom.

“The ensuite is wrapped around the corner to add to the sense of space.”

Room with a view

Due to the thoughtful placement of windows that maximise natural light, all bedrooms are light-filled.

“We have a skylight in our staircase to bring light through the top floor,” says Kate. “We have big windows in the ensuite and in our master bedroom.”

The sense of light and space in the master bedroom is accentuated by a balcony that is ideal for enjoying an el fresco breakfast on a warm morning or for privately soaking up some late afternoon sun.

Textures and details

Bedrooms in the duplex have been given a sophisticated but warm look with Kate and Luke’s choice of carpet and warm timber flooring. Their home features milky brown timber and earthier toned carpet, while the adjoining home has blonde timbers and grey carpet.

The wall encasing the bed acts like a sort of built-in bedhead. Picture: Alan Richardson.

“The master bedroom has a wall that slightly encases the bed and I’ve used a lot of linen for a natural coastal vibe,” says Kate.

“We have venetian plaster in all the bathrooms including the ensuite and that finish adds to the hotel feel – it’s a bit different and one of the special touches I love.”
