Living and dining makeover is “beautiful and gritty”.

Interior designer Silvia Roldan was recently engaged to transform the living and dining rooms in a Melbourne California bungalow. Naming the project Hidden Gem, Silvia says: “It’s a plush and seductive dining and living room that dials up the opulence to offer a saturated and tactile sensory experience where every touchpoint is highly considered.”

With the brief for them to be luxurious spaces for adults only, the clients were open to exploring ideas and pushing the limits with textural materials and daring colours. Incorporating the clients’ decorative objects and artworks, rejuvenating heirloom furniture and selecting new pieces created a contemporary and glamorous room inspired by the clients’ eclectic tastes.

“The tonal colour of the walls and floor creates an immersive, intoxicating space distinct from the other rooms in the house,” Silvia says. “The hues in Julie Corbet’s large, expressive painting inspired the custom deep violet carpet, and the purple-toned grey wall paint complements the dark blue Marenco sofa. The soft blue from the Redondo sofa balances and contrasts with the violet and deep blue.”

She adds: “Once the colour concept was decided, we explored furniture and materiality, every time pushing the dial up a notch to get something more textural, more colourful, more amazing than before.”

New steel-framed reeded-glass doors are an ode to Art Deco, as are the dazzling palm tree lamp and starburst mirror, with the gold carried through the metallic detailing in the lighting and coffee table. Re-staining and re-polishing the client’s antique dining table gave it new life and the contemporary dining chairs upholstered in a chunky boucle let the table’s curvaceous legs steal the attention.

“We chose decorative objects with intriguing forms and textures, from voluptuous metal and glass to ceramics that are beautiful and gritty.”
