With the cost of living at an all-time high, Sydney property stylist Justine Wilson shares her affordable tips to change out home décor and enhance the physical space without breaking the bank.

1.    Pick greenery or flowers! This one is so easy and a designer’s go-to for an instant uplift. This doesn’t have to be expensive either, you don’t need top-end blooms from a florist, and you can source cost-effective solutions such as grocery store potted herbs.

How to style: These can work on a coffee table, dining table, or in the kitchen for a cute cottage feel. If you have pretty trees surrounding you, a small cutting or large branch in a rustic pot sets the tone and creates a nice green cluster. If it’s an oversize it looks even more impressive, especially in the centre of a table or on an entry console.

2.    Paint: Painting a room or older furniture a new colour can have a massive impact, and for an average paint can cost of $120 this isn’t a big investment to totally change the feel of your space.

How to style: For a cosy and moody feel, consider a dark paint colour like navy charcoal or deep green, or the opposite if you wish to have a bright fun room go for colours like yellow or pink.

3.    Swap over cushions: This is a simple one and to save on cost you can always source just the covers and use your current inserts.

How to style: For winter got for rust, orange, brown or olive, and for spring/summer I like citrus tones or blues to echo the mood. Bringing in textures is also a good way to change the feel, like wool, faux fur, or linens.

4.    Trinkets: Sourcing vintage or preloved books, trinkets, and accessories from thrift shops, Esty or charity shops is cost-effective and helps reduce waste also.

How to style: Be it brass candlesticks, nice coffee table books or fun china or dishware for your next gathering, you can really personalise your space on a budget by shopping this way. Another fun way to source free or cheap items is to hunt on gumtree or facebook marketplace and either swap furniture with other punters or find great pieces to upcycle.

5.    Deep clean! This one is entirely free – but for a drastic uplift don’t underestimate the power of a deep clean of your home. Scrubbing walls with sugar soap wipes, wiping down windows, and decluttering cupboards, and drawers, can really transform how you feel and how you organise your home.
