Luke and Kate had clear ideas about the living area they wanted to create in their new Sydney duplex. The AFL footballer and his interior designer partner had their hearts set on a flowing, relaxed space with lots of natural light. On a practical level, plenty of storage space was also non-negotiable.

The stylish kitchens in the Sydney duplex boast plenty of open and closed storage.

Using the expertise of their architect and their eye for style, the couple have kicked some serious goals to create a contemporary open-plan home that feels spacious but cosy.

“The key challenge was to incorporate the kitchen, dining and lounge room in one space without it feeling too cramped,” says Kate. “We chose an architect with plenty of experience in designing duplexes so he did some amazing work with the floorplan.”

Locating three of the four bedrooms upstairs gave Luke, Kate and their architect more floorspace to play with downstairs and they also introduced some clever details to add a sense of space.

Let there be light… and plenty of it

The living area features a double storey void with over-sized windows that overlook the backyard. It brings the outdoors inside, creates the illusion of an even greater space and it’s a feature unto itself, catching your eye as soon as you step through the front door. They also wanted to create a sense of connection between the living spaces and outdoors.

The architectural light void floods the space with natural light and makes for an interesting feature.

“You could be preparing something in the kitchen and still be able to watch over your kids if they were in the backyard,” says Luke.

You can’t have too much storage

Luke and Kate had the same ideas on how they wanted their duplex to look. The only good-natured scuffle was between Kate, who insisted on having an enclosed staircase, and Luke’s Dad, Wayne, who helped build the duplex. He preferred the look of an open staircase but at the final siren, Kate won out.

“We knew we needed a lot of storage so I wanted the staircase closed in so that can be used for storage, too,” laughs Kate.

Seamless cabinetry

The stunning kitchen island isn’t just for show; it hides plenty of extra storage.

The couple score major points for the clever cabinetry that connects the kitchen and living space.

“We flowed the entertainment unit off the kitchen – so it’s one streamlined unit and it gives us so much more storage. We also have storage in the kitchen island – plus there’s the storage under the staircase that I’m pretty happy with,” says Kate.

Keeping it natural

Kate and Luke live in one of the duplexes and have decorated the kitchen and living space with darker tones. The neighbouring home has a lighter colour palette but both kitchens and living areas feature natural tones and textures.

The duplex Luke and Kate live in is a bit grittier and ‘sexier’, as Luke describes.

The couple rely on a joint virtual Pinterest board to share their style ideas and inspiration. They have similar tastes so there was no need to call on an umpire to make any final decisions.

“Luke added pictures, I added pictures and we bounced ideas off each other. We both have similar tastes so both homes have a relaxed coastal feel. The other house is more traditionally coastal whereas our home is a bit edgier with concrete, greys and darker timbers,” says Kate.

“The living area is a beautiful space. People walk inside and feel it is high-end and something a bit different. I particularly love sitting in the living space with the void and feeling that sense of ‘wow’.”
