Plumbing trouble: just the thought of it can strike fear into the heart of any household. No matter how well you maintain your plumbing, everyone will have to call a plumber at some point in their lives. Drippy taps and bursting pipes make the life of a plumbing system fraught with danger.
So just how many people have needed a plumber in the US in 2022? And do plumbing issues often reoccur? To answer these questions, we asked 2,500 adults in the US about how often they’ve needed a plumber in the last year.
Plumbing statistics in a nutshell
Want to cut to the chase? Here’s what we found out:
- Just over 1 in 10 US adults have needed a plumber in the past year (12%).
- More 1 million US adults needed a plumber over 10 times between 2021 and 2022 (0.4%).
- 25 to 34 year olds are the most likely to need a plumber out of any other US adults. Nearly 1 in 10 said that they needed a plumber more than once over the past year (9%).
- Over twelve million Americans needed a plumber more than 3 times over the past year (5%)
- Out of these, more than a million needed a plumber over 10 times! (0.4%)
- Alaska has both the highest average hourly wage for plumbers across the US ($32.09) and the third most interest in phrases related to becoming a plumber, with Alaskans searching for 7 times per 100,000 people in 2022.
- South Dakota has the lowest average hourly wage for plumbers across the entire US ($24.51).
What we asked: Our survey question
How high is the demand for plumbers in the US in 2022? To find out, we asked 2,500 US adults how many times they’ve needed the services of a plumber over the last year. We also asked for demographic information such as age and gender and categorized respondents into five age groups from 18-24 up to 55+.

How many people need a plumber in 2022?
So how many people have found themselves plagued by faulty plumbing in 2022? We found that:
- 1 in 10 adults in the US have needed a plumber over the course of the last year (12%)
- On top of that, 0.5% of US adults have needed a plumber more than 3 times from 2021 to 2022.
- In contrast, 88% of respondents say that they have not needed a plumber at all over the past year.
How many US adults have needed a plumber more than once over the past year?
Plumbing issues are usually (and thankfully) a rare ordeal – but what about the cases where one plumber just isn’t enough? How many plumbers do you need to fix the average plumbing disaster? In truth, it’s usually one. That said, our data uncovered a rather unlucky demographic: the US adults that need a plumber more than once a year. We calculated total population figures by taking a percentage out of 250 survey respondents and applying it to the total adult population in the US according to the 2020 census.
- Over a million Americans have needed a plumber over 10 times in the past year (0.4%).
- And over twelve million US adults have needed a plumber more than three times between 2021 and 2022 (5%).
- More than 1 in 6 adults in America have needed the services of a plumber more than once over the course of the past year (15%).
At what age are people most likely to have plumbing trouble?
Living situations change with age, as do responsibilities. In this case, which age groups are more likely to need the help of a plumber in the US in 2022? Are adults of certain ages more susceptible to plumbing trouble? In order to find out, we separated our survey respondents into age groups from 18-24 up to 55+.
- 25 to 34 year olds are more likely to experience recurring plumbing issues, with nearly 1 in 10 saying that they have needed a plumber more than once over the past year (9%).
- They are also more likely to need a plumber altogether, with over 1 in 6 answering that they needed one between 2021 and 2022.
- 93% of adults between 18 and 24 have not needed a plumber at all in the last year, making them the least likely age group to encounter plumbing trouble in 2022.
Are women or men more likely to need a plumber in the US?
It’s likely that the vast majority of us will have needed a plumber at least once in our lives. Whether that’s due to getting new appliances, faulty pipes or plumbing emergencies. But who’s most likely to have needed the assistance of a plumber? Men or women? To find out, we asked our respondents their gender.
- Women are almost twice as likely to need a plumber than men (15% vs 8%).
- Women are also the most likely to need a plumber more than once (6% vs 1%).
- Triple as many women say that they have needed a plumber more than three times compared to men (0.17% vs 0.75%).
Which states need plumbers the most across the US?
So which states in the US have the most trouble with their plumbing? Weather, infrastructure and household habits can all have an effect on the pipes. It’s no surprise that each state has its own plumbing needs – so where are plumbers in demand across the US? To find out, we used Keyword Finder to analyze search data for the phrase ‘plumbers near me’. We divided the search volume by the population of each state to find out the search rate per 100,000 people.

- Michigan is the state with the highest demand for plumbers, with Michiganders searching 333 times per 100,000 people for ‘plumbers near me’ between 2021 and 2022.
- Next up are the people of Oklahoma and Maine, who search for ‘plumbers near me’ 317 and 304 times per 100,000 people respectively.
- The people with the least interest in plumbers are Arkansawyers, searching only 50 times per 100,000 people.
Leaks, blockages in key pipes and flooding can all be emergencies in need of urgent plumbing help. Does the demand for emergency plumbing correlate with the demand for normal plumbing services across the states? To answer this question, we analyzed search data for the phrase ‘emergency plumber near me’.

- People in Maine have the greatest need for emergency plumbers, searching 15 times per 100,000 people, almost double the US average (8).
- Despite having the highest demand for plumbers out of any other US state, Michiganers are only tenth on the list when it comes to searches for ‘emergency plumbers near me’ (10).
- North Dakotans rarely need emergency plumbers at all, searching only 3 times per 100,000 people, the least out of any other US state.
How much do plumbers earn in each state across the US?
Like professionals in all fields, plumbers earn varying wages depending on their contract, experience and the place they work. We wanted to find out which states have the highest and lowest plumbing salaries across the US, so we used salary.com to analyze the average wage for plumbers in each state. We also compared these salaries to each state’s minimum wage using Paycor’s minimum wage list in order to assess how much plumbers are paid in comparison to other jobs. In states where the minimum wage is due to be updated in 2022, we used the upcoming minimum wage.
- The state with the highest average salary for plumbers is Alaska, with Alaskan plumbers earning $32.09 an hour.
- Alaska also has the third biggest difference between minimum wage and a plumber’s salary across the entire US ($21.75).
- The state with the biggest difference is Georgia, with an average plumber’s salary of $27.70 compared to a minimum wage of $5.15.
- The state with the lowest pay for plumbers is South Dakota ($24.51). It also has the lowest difference between a plumber’s salary and minimum wage out of any other US state ($14.56).

How many US adults are interested in becoming a plumber?
Considering the benefits and the demand, how many people are looking into becoming a plumber in the US in 2022? We gathered keyword data for several key phrases in order to find out: ‘plumbing training’, ‘plumbing classes near me’, ‘certificate of plumbing’, ‘how to become a plumber’, and ‘how to get a plumbing license’. We then combined the data for all of these phrases.
- Each year in the US, more than 100,000 searches are carried out for phrases related to learning how to become a plumber (104,040).
- People in Wyoming search for these phrases more than any other state, searching 9 times per 100,000 people, triple the US average of 3.
- Vermont and Alaska are up next, searching 8 and 7 times per 100,000 people respectively.
