Gas Leak
If your gas line has a leak, this not hot water issue could drag on for years. To check if you have a gas leak, turn off the main valves of your gas water heaters and inspect every gas line for wetness or strange smells.
If there’s anything unusual with your gas line, check if there’s a rotten egg smell. If this is the case, you may have a gas leak.

Water Heater Tank Leak
Your water heater can leak and result in no hot water around the house. An electric water heater and a gas water heater need water in the tank for the heating elements to warm up the cold water. After checking the storage tank water heaters and seeing that there’s water in the appliance, check the valves and pipe connections. If nothing seems to be amiss, it is time you replace your water heater.
Gas Valve Issue
You can also be lacking in hot water if you have a failing gas valve. First, check your gas supply line and then check if the gas is on. If your pilot light doesn’t stay lit, your gas supply is probably your water heater’s issue.
Pilot Light is Out
The pilot light is an indicator that your water heater is ready to use its heating elements and give you your hot water. If your hot water heater is suddenly not working, check out the pilot light. If it is out, relight the pilot light according to your manufacturer’s instructions.
If the pilot light still doesn’t light up, check on your gas inlet valve. It could be unopened.
Electric Water Heater Issue
The main difference between a gas hot water heater and its electric counterpart? Electricity. Turn off the electric hot water heater first before resetting the circuit breaker. If there’s still no hot water afterward, you will need to call an electrician.
Thermostat Damage
A home may also have no hot water if the thermostat is malfunctioning. A thermostat should be at a temperature of 122°F (50°C) to 140°F (60°C) in order to produce hot water and be energy efficient. If your thermostat is damaged, it should be replaced.
You’ve Run Out of Your Gas Supply
For those with a gas water heater, you could have an insufficient gas supply. Check on your gas settings as well as if there’s any damage or wear and tear.
Your Hot Water Heater Needs Cleaning
Your water heater could have sediment buildup. Over time, water heaters can accumulate minerals and grime. To ensure you have hot water when you need it, the hot water tank should be drained every year. A professional plumber can also clean your water heater for you.

Strangly enough, your hot water could depend on the weather. A water heater can heat up cold water more efficiently in warmer weather. If you live in colder environments, you may not need a water heater repair, just more patience. You can also insulate your water heater tanks to make sure that the heating elements isn’t affected by the outside temperature.
